RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University field hockey team fell to William and Mary Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field, 3-2, on Senior Day.
The Tribe (6-11, 2-5 CAA) scored two goals within less than three minutes of each other late in the second half, including Leah Zamesnik’s go-ahead tally in the 59th minute, to capture the victory.
“We had it in us, and we could have done it,” said VCU Head Coach Kelly McQuade, “It’s those couple of breakdowns, that are mostly mental, that are continuing to hurt us.”
The Rams got on the board first, at the 30:31 mark, when Hannah Lyerly (Williamsburg, Va.) received the ball from Chelsea Hill (Virginia Beach, Va.) behind the Tribe keeper to give VCU a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The second half was full of back-and-forth action. William and Mary’s Leah Zamesnik tied the game at 1-1 off a rebounded shot 47 minutes into the game.
The Tribe took a 2-1 lead when Mikala Savaides put the ball into the back of the boards in the 57th minute. But VCU wasn’t finished, answering just 10 seconds later when Lyerly scored her second goal of the game to tie the match at 2-2.
It did not last though. Zamesnik put William & Mary ahead to stay when she scored from the top of the circle with 11:56 left on the clock.
The Rams are now 8-9 for the season, including 1-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
VCU returns to the road next week, when they travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Northeastern, in their final CAA match on Friday Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. |
