VAN DESSEL, SCHERRER NAMED TO ALL-CAA TEAMS
11-6-09
RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, Netherlands) (pictured, above) and freshman Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) (pictured, right) were named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association Second Team, the league announced Friday at its pre-championship banquet.
It’s the second straight year van Dessel has appeared on the All-CAA Second Team. She is the first Ram to earn back-to-back All-CAA citations since Casey Smith in 2003 and 2004. The junior from the Netherlands tied Scherrer for the team lead with 11 goals and finished with 23 points. van Dessel led the Rams in shots with 70.
In three seasons, van Dessel has accumulated 25 goals and is tied with Heather Eckenrode for sixth in school history. van Dessel has 57 career points.
The award is Scherrer’s first. In addition, the freshman sensation earned a spot on the league’s All-Rookie squad.
Scherrer led VCU with 11 goals and 27 points. Three of Scherrer’s goals were game-winners. She was second on the Rams with 46 shots. Her 11 goals were the most by a VCU freshman since Carlot Verloop netted 20 in 2004.
The van Dessel-Scherrer combo accounted for 22 of VCU’s 39 goals in 2009. Behind their potent attack, the Rams finished 8-9 this season, the school’s best since 2004. VCU is expected to return 13 letterwinners in 2010, including van Dessel and Scherrer.
