NFHCA Division I All Region Teams
RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University freshman Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association South Region Second Team Thursday, the organization announced.
Scherrer is the first VCU player to earn All-Region status since Carlot Verloop and Casey Smith were selected to the second team in 2004.
The award did not come easy. The South Region is generally considered the most stocked division in the nation, and includes 2009 NCAA Tournament participants North Carolina, Richmond, Virginia and Wake Forest, as well as James Madison and Old Dominion.
Scherrer, who was also an All-Colonial Athletic Association Second Team pick, led the Rams with 11 goals this season and 27 points.
The speedy forward helped ignite VCU’s attack in 2009. Behind Scherrer, the Rams scored 39 goals this season, their most since 2004.
Scherrer was also timely. She provided three game-winning goals this season, including the clincher in the Rams’ 3-2 victory over 17th-ranked Iowa. |
