Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University field hockey team fell to Longwood, 1-0 in overtime Wednesday night.

The game was scoreless throughout regulation, but five minutes into the overtime period, Longwood’s Kelsey Turner found an opening, dribbled into the right of the circle and crossed the ball to Amanda Babineau for the winning goal.

VCU slips to 6-5 with the loss, while Longwood improves to 4-6. The Rams have been unable to dodge close losses, dropping straight overtime matches, dating back to last season.

The two teams were evenly matched, with the Lancers outshooting the Rams by an 8-7 margin. VCU freshmen keeper Megan Botteri (Mount Bethel, Pa.) racked up three saves in 75 minutes of play for the Rams.

“The girls just looked tired,” VCU Head Coach Kelly McQuade said. “Things just seemed to fall apart in the second half.  Hopefully we’ll come out ready and fired up for Friday.”

The Rams return to action on Friday, Oct. 9 when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on 11th-ranked James Madison at 7 p.m.
