SCHERRER SCORES TWO AS RAMS TAME WILDCATS, 3-0

RICHMOND, Va. – Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) scored two goals to lift the Virginia Commonwealth University to a 3-0 victory over Davidson Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field.
All three goals came in the first half of the game. Scherrer scored her first after receiving a ball in front of the goal from Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, The Netherlands) nine minutes into the contest.
Six minutes later, van Dessel scored off of a penalty corner when she sent a hard shot into the near corner of the cage from the left wing.
VCU added a third score when senior Rachel Krumm (Norfolk, Va.) recovered a rebound and found Scherrer on the left side of the circle for a wide-open shot in the 31st minute.
“This is just what the team needed at this stage in our season,” said VCU Head Coach Kelly McQuade, “This was a good team win.”
The Rams were sound offensively and defensively on the way to their second shutout of the year. In addition, the Black and Gold outshot the Wildcats 22-13, including a 19-1 margin in the first half alone. VCU keepers Megan Botteri (Mount Bethel, Pa.) and Erin Jablonski (Charlottesville, Va.) split time in the cage.
The Rams broke their four game losing streak and improved to 7-6 on the year. It’s the most victories in a for a VCU team since a 10-9 finish in 2004.
The Rams will return to Cary Street Field on Friday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. when they take on Appalachian State. |
