Rams to Host "Play for a Cure" Sunday

RICHMOND, Va. – The 8-7 Virginia Commonwealth University field hockey team’s season is winding down, as the Rams get ready to face two Colonial Athletic Association foes this weekend.

VCU will host the Monarchs of Old Dominion Friday at Cary Street Field at 4 p.m. and then have a day off before taking on the William and Mary Tribe on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.

Alison Bilbo sat down with Ram’s Head Coach Kelly McQuade this week to see how the team is preparing for the end of the season.

AB:  You're coming off of two non-conference wins and one loss in the past two weeks, how do you think coming into CAA play that will benefit the team?

KM: Anytime you can get a check in the left hand column, it's great for the confidence of the team.  Having the two wins outside of conference is a great boost for us.

AB:   William & Mary and Old Dominion have always been hard games for the Rams, how have you been preparing the girls this past week for this challenging weekend?

KM: To say the least!  We have been battling with these two teams for the past two years and this time we will come out on top.  William and Mary is always a more emotional game for Shannon and me because of our ties.  This week we had Richmond on Tuesday so our focus was tied up.  However, Richmond was a great opener for the two games this weekend.

AB:  At this point in the season, being 8-7 for the season and 1-4 in CAA play, would two wins this weekend mean for the Rams season?

KM: Two wins this weekend can solidify that we would finish up with a winning season.  That has been our goal all year and we are very close to achieving it.

AB:   You said last week that the team was doing an excellent job generating attack, what will be the biggest obstacle for them this weekend to keep that attack going?

KM: We will have to match the high-paced attack that ODU is sure to bring.  They are very good at putting pressure on the ball so we will have to be on our game with distributing.  William and Mary plays a very similar system to ours and will be a very even match.  Both are winnable games and we will have to work hard to take the wins.

AB: You were able to clear the bench in the Davidson game and got a lot of players in during Appalachian State, are there any girls that stood out to you in those games that you see having in impact this weekend?

KM: Mel Marotta has been doing a fantastic job coming off the bench for us.  She is poised and very technically sound.  Her skill level is continually improving and she is showing us some great things on the forward line!
