RICHMOND, Va.  – Senior Rachel Krumm (Norfolk, Va.) (pictured, right) scored a pair of goals and Virginia Commonwealth University earned its first conference win in a 5-1 rout of Towson Sunday at Cary Street Field.

“These girls are really strong, this was a great mental win for us,” said VCU Head Coach Kelly McQuade.

VCU moved to 6-2 on the year and 1-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Rams also surpassed their victory total from last season. VCU last won as many as six matches in 2005. Towson slips to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Krumm scored both her goals on nearly identical penalty corners. Her first came 12 minutes into the match, when she sent a stick stop by Flore van Dessel (Oisterwijk, Netherlands) past a diving Towson keeper for a 1-0 VCU lead.

The Rams dominated possession in the half, and pushed ahead 2-0 when freshman Chelsea Hill (Virginia Beach, Va.) dribbled into the heart of the Tiger defense and flipped a backhanded shot into the cage in the 21st minute. It was Hill’s first collegiate goal.

VCU wasn’t done. Krumm added her second score early in the second period, and freshman Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) added her eighth goal of the season a short time later when she streaked up the left sideline from midfield before cutting into the crease.

The Rams’ freshman keeper, Megan Botteri (Mount Bethel, Pa.) kept the Tigers at bay with eight saves, including one that denied a Towson penalty stroke. Botteri and the Rams successfully killed all 10 Towson corners on the day.

Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, The Netherlands) added a goal in the 54th minute for VCU.

The Rams are return to Philadelphia, Pa. for a Friday, Oct. 2 contest with Drexel at 7 p.m.
