OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Sophomore Rosan van Eijkelenburg (Middleburg, Holland) (pictured) capped a wild 12-minute stretch and forced overtime with a late goal, but Virginia Commonwealth University dropped a heartbreaker to Towson, 4-3, in double overtime Friday.
Playing out a penalty corner with no time remaining, van Eijkelenburg knocked in a deflection to send the game to overtime tied at 3-3.
After nearly 15 scoreless minutes, Towson’s Kristie Blumer found paydirt off a Christina Boarman feed 4:40 into the second overtime to give the Tigers (7-2, 1-0 CAA) the win.
In the second half, the two teams traded four goals over a frantic 12-minute period.
With the score 1-1, Mariah Schuette put Towson ahead with a goal in the 59th minute. VCU’s Nina Banaag (Virginia Beach, Va.) netted the equalizer off a Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, Netherlands) feed with 5:22 remaining in regulation. Three minutes later, Towson’s Danielle Wacker scored for the second time in the match for a 3-2 Tiger lead. Van Eijkelenburg’s goal 2:10 later sent VCU (4-5, 0-1 CAA) to extra periods for the second time this year.
Van Dessel also scored a first-half goal for the Rams. She has a team-high seven goals this season.
Towson out shot VCU, 19-10 and held a 14-7 advantage in penalty corners.
