FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sophomore Rosan van Eijkelenburg (Middleburg, Holland) scored 7:40 into overtime to give Virginia Commonwealth University a 2-1 victory over Fairfield Friday in the season opener for both schools.

Van Eijkelenburg, who scored one goal last season, deflected a free hit from sophomore Flore van Dessel (Oisterwijk, The Netherlands) to cap a come-from-behind performance for the Rams.

In the 66th minute, VCU senior Alaina Vernetti (Fredericksburg, Va.) knocked in a rebound in front of the cage to knot the score at 1-1.

Senior Laura Baker (Kent, England) made 11 saves in goal for the Black and Gold, to help VCU overcome a 16-5 shot deficit.

Emily Janis scored off a feed from Melanie Leo in the 56th minute for the Red Foxes.

VCU returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 31 when it takes on Monmouth University at So Sweet a Cat Field in West Long Branch, N.J.
