KELLY MCQUADE CHECKS IN AS VCU PREPARES TO OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY
9-25-09
VCU: Now that you're done with your non-conference schedule, would you say the team has exceeded your expectations, right on target, or need a little more work so far this year?
KM: Can I say all three? I think that individually, there are girls that have exceeded my expectations. As a team we are developing right on schedule and hitting our stride at a good point in the year. However, we still have a few things to tighten up on. Overall, I am very proud of our team, we are starting to turn heads and making a name for ourselves.
VCU: You guys had a big win on Sunday, displaying both your offensive and defensive prowess... were you guys pleased with the way you played?
KM: Anytime we can post a shutout, I'll be happy. That doesn't mean that we did things perfectly, there were still some scary moments and a few things to learn from. But that is to be expected with a young team. I was happiest with our goals. Not just the number, but the way they were scored. They were very pretty!
VCU: It seemed there was a pretty good crowd for your game on Sunday, how was it to be back at home in front of your fans?
KM: It is very nice to be back home for some games. Starting with a heavy away schedule is never easy, but it makes coming home to play that much better. We have had success on the road which can be a difficult task to accomplish, but playing at home involves more pride for your field that adds to our level of play. Our fans are fantastic and the amount of support they give is second to none!
VCU: Heading into the conference slate, what do you think is going to be most important for your team to be successful?
KM: We will need everyone to be sharp. We have to come out strong and control the momentum of the games from the start. Get them on their heels early and keep them there. We will need to focus on possession and building up the attack from the backfield.
VCU: You've been in the CAA for close to 10 years now, how difficult a league is it?
KM: Has it really been that long? Thanks for pointing that out. This league, in my mind, is the second strongest league in the country. We have three teams in the top 20 with three more receiving votes this week. That is a very strong overall conference. We have the perennial powerhouses, but when it comes to CAA play, all of the games have the potential to be one goal wins.
VCU: The perennial powers will always be there, other than your team, which school do you see as a "sleeper" that could be dangerous in conference play?
KM: think that Northeastern is going to have a good run this year.
VCU: Alright, let's get your MVP, Best Newcomer, Most Improved and your "Hustle" award for your team so far?
KM: MVP - Marle van Dessel - All around player, can change the momentum of the game with a big play
Best Newcomer - Kelsey Scherrer - A threat on attack that can score at will
Most Improved - Lindsay Shacklette - Her development over the past 3 years has been very fun to watch, she is making a name for herself
Hustle Award - Ashley Aston - She always puts her best effort forward and will sacrifice her body for the ball |
