CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Seniors Rafael Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg, Va.) posted top-five performances to lead Virginia Commonwealth University to a second-place, albeit heartbreaking, finish at the University of Maryland Intercollegiate Sunday at the Par 71 River Marsh Golf Club. North Carolina earned a one-stroke victory when it surged past VCU in Sunday’s third and final round. The Tarheels shot a combined 1-under par on the final 18 holes to erase a seven-stroke VCU advantage. North Carolina (849) and VCU (850) were followed by N.C. State (858), Virginia (862) and Kent State (865). Campos (-3) finished third in the individual standings, four strokes off the lead. Griffin (-2) was fourth overall. Also for the Rams, senior Vincent Nadeau (Penhook, Va.) placed 13th at 3-over, while sophomore Chase Sargent (Orlando, Fla.) tied for 14th at 4-over. VCU shot a tournament-low 275 in Saturday’s second round, positioning the Rams for their first victory of the 2009-2010 season, but North Carolina carded Sunday’s best round by four strokes to steal the win.
