MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – Senior Vincent Nadeau (Penhook, Va.) (pictured, above) helped Virginia Commonwealth University shake an early funk, shooting a second-round 68 to keep the Rams among the leaders Monday at the annual VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club.

Nadeau and senior Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg, Va.) (pictured, right) completed the 36-hole first day at 2-under par and tied for seventh place. VCU is tied for third, at 5-over, 10 strokes off the pace of tournament leader UNC Wilmington (-5). Wake Forest (+4) is second, followed by VCU and Virginia (+5).

Monday was a little bit of Jekyll and Hyde for VCU. The Rams wilted towards the end of round one and shot a 10-over 298 to sink into a ninth-place tie. But just as fast as they found themselves out of contention, the Rams catapulted back into the race.

Nadeau carded his best round of the fall season, while sophomore Chase Sargent (Orlando, Fla.) fired a 1-under 71. Griffin was close behind with and even par 72. All told, VCU recorded a five-under 283, the second best round of the tournament.

UNCW stormed out of the gate with a tournament-best 7-under 281 over the first 18 holes. The Seahawks cooled to a respectable 2-over 290 in the second round, but still hold a commanding nine-stroke advantage over defending champion Wake Forest.

2008 Co-Champion Brendan Gielow is poised to repeat after shooting a 7-over 137 over the first 36 holes. UNC Greensboro’s Robert Hoadley (-5) and Charlotte’s Corey Nagy (-4) are within striking distance.

The Rams will tee off with the No. 1 group for Tuesday’s final round, which will feature an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.
