RICHMOND, Va. – Non-conference match-ups with Oklahoma, Richmond and New Mexico, as well as contests with league rivals Old Dominion and George Mason highlight the 2008-09 Virginia Commonwealth University men’s basketball schedule, released Wednesday.

The Rams, 24-8 a year ago, open the season Nov. 7, with their annual exhibition tilt with neighboring Virginia Union at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

The regular season tips off Sunday, Nov. 16 when the Rams host The Citadel at the Alltel Pavilion at 4 p.m. That will be followed Nov. 19 when VCU meets South Dakota State at the Siegel Center. Those games form the home portion of the Cancun Challenge. The Black and Gold will travel to Cancun, Mexico and play New Mexico Nov. 29. VCU will play either Drake or Vanderbilt the following day to conclude the tournament.

City bragging rights will be on the line Saturday, Dec. 13, when the Rams battle Richmond at the Robins Center.

On Saturday, Dec. 20, VCU will play Oklahoma and former Rams’ coach Jeff Capel at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, as part of the All-College Classic doubleheader.

Colonial Athletic Association play hits full stride in January, when the Rams head to Newark, Del. to meet the Blue Hens of the University of Delaware. Conference home match-ups with Old Dominion (Jan. 17), George Mason (Jan. 24) and William & Mary (Feb. 7) will follow.

VCU will also participate in the ESPN BracketBusters event again this season. The Rams are designated as a road team and will meet a to-be-determined opponent Saturday, Feb. 21.

The regular season concludes with the CAA Tournament March 6-9 at the Richmond Coliseum.

All times and dates are subject to change.
