Box Score

ATLANTA – Senior Eric Maynor (Raeford, N.C.) provided a nearly flawless performance, scoring 26 points with six assists and zero turnovers to spark Virginia Commonwealth University to a 65-50 win over Georgia State Wednesday.

The VCU victory, coupled with Northeastern’s victory over George Mason, slides the Rams into a first place in the Colonial Athletic Association. VCU, Northeastern and George Mason are all 7-1 in league play. The Rams improve to 14-5 overall and have won six straight. Georgia State falls to 5-14 and 3-5 in the CAA.

Where Maynor supplied the flash, sophomore Larry Sanders (Fort Pierce, Fla.) added muscle with 11 points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Classmate Joey Rodriguez (Oviedo, Fla.) knocked down 3-of-6 3-pointers and finished with 13 points, four assists and three steals.

Additionally, Maynor’s six assists leave him two shy of breaking school career mark, held by Edmund Sherod (582).

VCU limited the Panthers to 35-percent (17-of-48) shooting to the field and outrebounded GSU, 31-24. The Rams committed just nine turnovers.

The victory sets the stage for a critical two-game stretch for VCU. The Rams return home, where they will face George Mason at the Siegel Center on Saturday at 4 p.m. in a nationally-televised contest.
