CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University newcomer Nicolas Vinel (Metz, France) had a solid debut to highlight a strong showing for the Rams at the UVA Fall Invitational over the weekend.
Vinel, a freshman, plowed through the ‘B’ Singles draw, scoring victories over Patrick Daciek of Virginia Tech in the round of 16, Haig Schneiderman of Columbia in the quarters and Filip Kricka of Stetson in the semis.
Vinel was forced to withdraw prior to Sunday’s final with Sibastian Vidal of William & Mary.
In other action, junior Thibaut Charron (Sens, France) advanced to the ‘A-1’ Singles semifinals. Charron was impressive, defeating Cesare Gallo of Stetson, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round, as well as Oscar Podlewski of Elon, 7-5, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Charron was forced to retire midway through his semifinal match with Drew Courtney of Virginia.
