NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University men’s track and field team has long been known as a force in the sprint events and the Black and Gold are living up to that legend this season as well as the Rams dominated the track once again this past weekend, this time at the New Captains Classic, hosted by Christopher Newport University.

Sophomore DeAngelo Wilson (Richmond, Va.) was outstanding once again as he picked up yet another win in the 100-meter dash as he broke the tape in 10.51. The second-year standout lead a quartet of Rams in the top-10 as senior Jason Gallo (Rochester, N.Y.) earned a sixth-place tie with teammate Antonio Norvell (Portsmouth, Va.) as both sprinters stopped the clock in 10.88. Senior Jackie DeShazo (Mechanicsville, Va.) rounded out the quartet with a time of 11.08, good for eighth place.

That quartet brought their success together in the 4x100 relay as the squad earned the top spot in the event as they crossed the line in 41.22.

Senior Grant Matthews (Chester, Va.) had his second straight strong weekend as the veteran earned two top-five finishes at the meet. He placed second in the javelin throw with a toss of 157’ 7” and garnered a fourth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.25.

A pair of freshman earned top-five finishes in the triple jump as Joe Edwards (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Brian Wallace (Portsmouth, Va.) grabbed the third and fifth place slots, respectively. Edwards 46’ 6” was the second-best collegiate finish at the meet, while Wallace’s leap of 46’ was right behind his teammate.

The Rams will be back in action for their final regular season meet of the season at the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 16-17 in Atlanta, Ga.
