RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman Marisa Low (Carlsbad, Calif.) led a stout defensive effort with a career-high 31 digs, but it wasn’t enough to lift Virginia Commonwealth University, which fell to William & Mary Friday, 3-2 (14-25, 25-23, 25-21, 26-28, 15-13), at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

William & Mary slid into sole possession of second place in the Colonial Athletic Association with the victory. The Tribe improved to 13-7 overall and 5-1 in league play. The Rams fell to 15-8 on the year, including 4-2 in CAA play.

VCU freshman Michala Kvapilova (Liberec, Czech Republic) (pictured, right) provided 17 kills, 14 digs and hit .280 for the Rams, while junior Kelsie Clegg (Boise, Idaho) contributed nine kills, five blocks and a .348 hitting percentage.

Erin Skipper smashed 17 kills and Lindsey Pflugner booked 31 digs to pace the Tribe.

Much like their meeting Sept. 26 in Williamsburg, Va., a 3-1 VCU win, Friday’s match was marked by a number of extended rallies, sparked by outstanding defense. The Rams were credited with 109 digs in the contest, their most since VCU recorded 113 against James Madison on Oct. 22, 2004. William & Mary registered 94 digs.

Including Low, three Rams had 20 digs or more.  Sophomore Alyssa Foster (Richmond, Va.) provided 25 for VCU and junior Lenka Melicharkova (Zlin, Czech Republic) chipped in with 20 to go with her 45 assists and four kills.

The Rams outhit the Tribe, .201-.166, but VCU struggled on serve reception and allowed 13 William & Mary aces. Lindsay Kresch had six aces of her own, as well as 15 kills, 15 digs and three blocks for the Green and Gold.

VCU jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the fifth and deciding set on the strength of three Tribe miscues over a four-play span. However, the Black and Gold fed a 7-1 William & Mary burst with three hitting errors and a reception error. The Rams clawed to within 12-11 and 14-13 on separate occasions, but Skipper hammered a set from Cassie Crumal to secure the win for the Tribe, 15-13.

It looked like VCU would run away with the match early, storming out of the gates with a nearly flawless 25-14 rout in the first set. The Rams never trailed and hit .353 in the frame. The Tribe fought back to win a back-and-forth second set that featured 13 ties and eight lead changes.

VCU returns to action on Friday, Oct. 23 when it hosts Hofstra at 7 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
