WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman Michala Kvapilova (Liberec, Czech Republic) spurred Virginia Commonwealth University with 15 kills in a 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 25-14, 27-25) victory over Georgetown Tuesday at McDonough Arena.
VCU has won four straight and five of its last six matches to improve to 12-5 this season. Georgetown is 10-8.
Kvapilova was the driving force behind a potent Ram attack. The 6-1 rookie hit .478 on the night and also had three blocks, as the Black and Gold outhit the Hoyas, .259 to .138.
“Micha had a great performance. She really, really played well,” VCU Head Coach James Finley said.
In addition, for the second time in as many matches, VCU overcame a big deficit in the fourth set. Trailing 23-19, the Rams received three kills from Kvapilova and got a lift from three Georgetown hitting errors to clinch the match with a 27-25 win. On Saturday, Sept. 26, the Rams rallied from a 22-18 hole in the fourth set at William & Mary to salt away a victory.
Defensively, freshman Marisa Low (Carlsbad, Calif.) collected 13 digs for the Rams. Additionally, senior Ivana Rich (Cumberland, Va.) had eight kills and three blocks, while junior Lenka Melicharkova (Zlin, Czech Republic) provided 37 assists and two service aces.
Paris Coleman paced Georgetown with eight kills and eight digs.
VCU returns to action on Friday, Oct. 2 when it travels to Fairfax, Va. to meet Colonial Athletic Association foe George Mason at 7 p.m. |
