RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Mariel Frey (Lititz, Pa.) had 10 kills and 10 digs, while classmate Kelsie Clegg (Boise, Idaho) totaled nine blocks to spark Virginia Commonwealth University to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-17) win over Liberty Tuesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
VCU has won three straight matches to improve to 18-8 overall. The Rams finished 5-2 during their seven-match home stand. Liberty, the two-time defending Big South champs, falls to 14-9 with the loss.
Frey, who hit .429 on the evening, recorded her ninth double-double of the season. She has posted double-doubles in three straight matches. Clegg’s nine blocks are a season-high. The 6-5 middle blocker added eight kills for the Rams.
Also for VCU, junior setter Lenka Melicharkova (Zlin, Czech Republic) (pictured, right) provided 31 assists, nine digs, five kills and three blocks, while senior Ivana rich (Cumberland, Va.) hit .583 with eight kills.
The Black and Gold dominated in nearly every statistical category, hitting .297, compared to Liberty’s .101, while also outblocking the Flames, 12-4.
Karyl Bacon led Liberty with 10 kills and 14 digs.
The Rams return to the floor on Friday, Oct. 30, when they head to Newark, Del. to face first place Delaware at 7 p.m. |
