VCU MAINTAINS PACE, THROTTLES TOWSON, 3-0, FOR 20TH WIN

TOWSON, Md. – Senior Ivana Rich (Cumberland, Va.) hit .643 with six blocks to spark Virginia Commonwealth University to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 30-28) win over Towson Saturday at the Towson Center.

The Rams improved to 20-8 overall and 8-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the victory. It’s the second 20-win season of Head Coach James Finley’s five-year tenure. VCU has won 20 matches in a season eight times, but just twice since 1994. Towson slipped to 8-18, as well as 1-10 in CAA action.

Rich, a 5-11 middle blocker, ripped nine kills and did not commit a hitting error to lead a VCU attack that hit .197. In addition, freshman Michala Kvapilova (Liberec, Czech Republic) supplied a match-high 12 kills and three blocks, while junior Kelsie Clegg (Boise, Idaho) added seven blocks to aid the Rams.

Britney Loomis led the Tigers with 10 kills.

VCU recorded 13 blocks in just three games and held Towson to a .023 hitting percentage. The Tigers committed 30 hitting errors on the evening.

Rich moved closer to VCU’s all-time record for total blocks in the win. With six total blocks, she raised her career total to 349, one behind all-time leader Jonnie Stone.

The Rams return to action on Friday, Nov. 6, when they host James Madison at the Verizon Wireless Arena at 7 p.m.
