RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Ivana Rich (Cumberland, Va.) recorded eight blocks to become Virginia Commonwealth University’s all-time leader and spark the Rams past James Madison, 3-1 (25-14, 25-13, 23-25, 27-25), Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

VCU has won a season-high six straight and improves to 21-8 overall and 9-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Rams remain half a game behind first-place Delaware, which defeated Towson Friday night. JMU saw its four-match winning streak come to an end and dropped to 11-17 overall and 4-8 in CAA action.

Rich, who needed just two blocks to pass Jonnie Stone on the Rams’ all-time list, picked up the record-breaker early in the first set. When the mark was recognized during a subsequent timeout, Rich received a warm ovation. She now has 357 career blocks.

In addition to her work at the net, Rich added 10 kills and hit .318. Also for the Rams, junior Mariel Frey  (Lititz, Pa.) smashed a match-high 14 kills, while junior setter Lenka Melicharkova (Zlin, Czech Republic)  handed out 41 assists and registered seven kills. Defensively, freshman Marisa Low (Carlsbad, Calif.) produced 23 digs.

Lindsay Callahan and Kelly Turner registered 11 kills apiece for the Dukes, but JMU hit just .037 on the night without its top hitter, freshman Danielle Erb.

VCU hit .207 and cruised to 25-14 and 25-13 wins in the first and second sets, respectively. However, the Dukes battled back for a 25-23 win in the third set as the Rams hit .070 with 11 errors. VCU never trailed in the fourth set, although the James Madison did push the Rams in a 27-25 win.

The Black and Gold return to the floor on Saturday, Nov. 7 when it hosts George Mason at 7 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The Rams will be looking to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Patriots on Oct. 2 in Fairfax, Va. With Delaware idle, VCU can move into a first-place tie with the Blue Hens with a victory.
