RAMS TOP FAIRFIELD TO EARN SPLIT AT MICHIGAN CHALLENGE

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Senior Ivana Rich (Cumberland, Va.) scorched eight kills, served up three aces and booked two blocks to lift Virginia Commonwealth University to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 26-24) victory over Fairfield, and to a split for the day, Friday at the Michigan Challenge at Cliff Keen Arena.

Earlier in the day, VCU (7-3) dropped a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-23) decision to Missouri.

Rich hit .316 against Fairfield (2-6) and .424 for the day to bolster the Rams. Freshman Kristin Boyd (Wilmington, N.C.) provided nine kills and junior Mariel Frey (Lititz, Pa.) added eight kills and three blocks for VCU against the Red Foxes.

The Rams trailed just once in the first two sets on the way to dispatching Fairfield in an hour and eight minutes. VCU hit .202, compared to Fairfield’s .031, and outblocked the Red Foxes, 8-2.

As dominant as the Rams were against Fairfield, Missouri was similarly impressive against VCU in the first match of the day.

Rich hit .571 with eight kills and five blocks, but couldn’t slow the Tigers’ attack.

Missouri (6-2) hit .291 for the match and served up nine aces. Paola Ampudia led UM with 11 kills.

Boyd added nine kills and hit .500 for the Rams.

VCU returns to action at the Michigan Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 12. The Rams will face their toughest test of the season when they match up with the host Wolverines, currently ranked seventh in the AVCA Coaches Poll, at 12:30 p.m. VCU will also face two-time defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Morehead State to close the tournament at 5 p.m.
