RICHMOND, Va. – The VCU Volleyball team kicks off the 2008 season in earnest this weekend with the annual Third Degree Sportswear Invitational at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
VCU, Kansas, N.C. State, Central Michigan, Maryland and Liberty comprise an exciting six-team field. Four matches will be contested Friday, Aug. 29, followed by five on Saturday, Aug. 30.
The Rams open the tournament Friday when they take on N.C. State at noon. VCU will return to the Siegel Center later in the evening to battle the Kansas Jayhawks at 7 p.m. VCU and Kansas last met in 2005, with the Jayhawks claiming a 3-0 win in Lawrence, Kan.
On Saturday, the Rams will meet Maryland at 7 p.m. VCU and Maryland clashed in last year’s tournament - a match that proved to be one of the most exciting of the 2007 VCU season. The Terrapins prevailed, but not before the Rams pushed them to five sets, including a 15-13 dogfight in the finale.
VCU returns eight letterwinners from last season’s squad, including Third-Team All-CAA libero Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba, Brazil), a senior, and All-Rookie pick Jessica Ojukwu (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Also returning are seniors Cat Juson (Long Beach, Calif.) and Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany). In addition, the Rams welcome seven newcomers.
“Our program is in a very healthy situation,” said fourth-year Coach James Finley. “We were really young last year and we’re still young. We’ve become much more athletic. We still have a maturity thing to accomplish this year. I think we have all the pieces to have an opportunity to compete for the championship, put us back where we should be and move forward from there.”
