RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman Marketa Janeckova (Olomouc, Czech Republic) fired a season-high 13 kills to vault Virginia Commonwealth University past American, 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 28-26) Tuesday at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

The Rams’ victory slows a previously red-hot Eagles squad. American (18-7) hadn’t lost since Sept. 20, a streak of 13 matches. VCU improves to 16-9, which is tied for the program’s most wins since the 2005 season.

Janeckova hit .290 on the evening, committing just four attacking errors in 31 swings. The 5-11 outside hitter also collected 11 digs for her second double-double of the season.

American entered the match hitting .288 on the season, the ninth-best mark in the country. VCU limited the Eagles to a .144 attack percentage Tuesday. American hit .353 in the first set, but just .110 the rest of the match.

Senior Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany) added 12 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore Jessica Ojukwu (Sao Paulo, Brazil) chipped in with nine kills, three blocks and a .368 hitting percentage for VCU.

Rubena Sukaj led all players with 21 kills for American.

The Rams return to conference play in their next match, when they travel to face UNC Wilmington in Wilmington, N.C. on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
