CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Jessica Ojukwu (Sao Paulo, Brazil) (pictured) led a spirited effort with 14 kills, but Virginia Commonwealth University dropped a 3-0 decision to Virginia, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 in the Friday Jefferson Cup at Memorial Gymnasium.
VCU has dropped three straight to fall to 3-4. The Cavaliers are 5-4.
Playing before a capacity crowd of 714, the Rams pushed Virginia to the limit in all three games, but were unable to get over the top.
Ojukwu hit a team-best .308 on the night and added two blocks. Senior libero Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba, Brazil) had 12 of VCU’s 50 digs on the night.
The key to Virginia’s victory proved to be its .265 to .132 hitting advantage. The Rams committed 22 hitting errors, compared to the Cavaliers 14.
This was the first meeting between these two in state rivals since 2004.
Action continues in the Jefferson Cup on Saturday, Sept. 13, when VCU takes on Appalachian State at 10:30 a.m., followed by Binghamton at 4:30 p.m. |
