LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore Mariel Frey (Lititz, Pa.) (pictured) and freshman Marketa Janeckova (Olomouc, Czech Republic) combined for 25 of Virginia Commonwealth University’s 47 kills, as well as eight blocks, to ignite a 3-1 (26-24, 15-25, 25-15, 25-22) Rams’ victory over Liberty Tuesday at the Vines Center.

Janeckova staked the Rams (8-6) to a 1-0 lead with five kills in the first set. She topped that in the second, when she hammered six more in 10 swings. Janeckova, who came into the match with 28 kills on the season, had 11 of VCU’s first 20 kills in the contest.

In the second half of the match it was all Frey. The third set alone yielded seven Frey kills and zero errors on the way to a 25-15 Rams’ rout. Frey added five more kills in the fourth set as the Black and Gold put the match to rest. The 5-11 middle blocker hit .545 on the evening. She had nine kills and zero errors in her first 12 hitting attempts of the night.

Additionally, sophomore Ivana Rich (Cumberland, Va.) hit .375 with eight kills and five blocks, while senior Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba, Brazil) provided 20 digs for the visitors.

Nicki Scripko led all players with 19 kills for Liberty (11-5), the defending Big South Champions.

The Rams out hit the Flames, .197 to .143 and out blocked them, 11.0 to 6.5.

VCU returns to action on Friday, Oct. 3 when it travels to Towson, for a Colonial Athletic Association match. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
