Box Score
BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Ivana Rich (Cumberland, Va.) led Virginia Commonwealth University with 12 kills, but the Rams fell short in their bid to topple first-place Northeastern, 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 16-25, 25-19) Sunday on Solomon Court.
VCU moves to 19-10 overall and 10-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Black and Gold finished second in the league’s regular season and have earned a first-round bye in the upcoming CAA Tournament Nov. 22-24.
The Rams came into Sunday with a chance, albeit a slim one, to claim the No. 1 seed and the right to host the tournament. VCU needed to sweep the Huskies, and do so convincingly, to sway the conference’s tiebreakers in their favor.
That did not happen, as Northeastern led wire-to-wire in the first set, holding the Rams to a .108 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-16 triumph. From there, it was all academic.
Rich led the way for VCU, hitting .345 on the day with two blocks. Three players added seven kills for the Rams, including sophomore Kelsie Clegg (Boise, Idaho), who hit .235 with three blocks.
Britney Brown sparked the Huskie attack with 15 kills, 18 assists and two blocks.
The CAA Tournament begins in Boston on Saturday, Nov. 22. VCU will take on the winner of third-seeded Delaware and sixth-seeded Towson in the semifinals on Sunday, Nov. 23.
