RICHMOND, Va. – The 2009 VCU Volleyball team topped a squad of Rams’ alumni Sunday, 3-0, at the annual Black & Gold Scrimmage at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. The Rams were paced by junior Lenka Melicharkova (Zlin, Czech Republic) and senior Ivana Rich (Cumberland, Va.), as well as promising freshman Michala Kvapilova (Liberec, Czech Republic). VCU held the alums to just seven points in each of the first two sets, showcasing the skills that led the Colonial Athletic Association coaches to tab the Rams second in the league’s preseason poll. The VCU Alumni squad featured former two-time All-CAA picks Ludmila Francescatto and Laryssa Goncalves, as well as recent graduate Cat Juson. VCU kicks off the 2009 season on Friday, Aug. 28 and Saturday, Aug. 29, when the Rams host the Third Degree Sportswear Invitational at the Siegel Center. VCU opens the tournament with Temple at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
