Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomores Ariel Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) (pictured, right) and Jessica Ojukwu (Sao Paulo, Brazil) spiked 10 kills apiece and Virginia Commonwealth University hit .324 on the way to a convincing 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-20) win over Delaware Friday at the Alltel Pavilion.

The Rams improve to 15-8 overall and have won five straight Colonial Athletic Association matches to raise their league mark to 7-2. The victory allows VCU to keep a share of second place with William & Mary, which defeated Towson Friday, 3-1.

Delaware, which had an opportunity to overtake the Rams in the league standings, slips to 12-14, including 6-4 in the CAA.

VCU was dominant from start to finish, recording its second-highest hitting percentage of the season. Ojukwu hit .444, while sophomore Mariel Frey (Lititz, Pa.) registered a .462 mark with nine kills. The Rams trailed just once in the first set and led the second from wire-to-wire. VCU fell behind 16-13 in the third frame, only to close with a 12-4 flurry.

Senior Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany) added nine kills for the Rams, surpassing 1,100 for her career in the process. She also had match-high 14 digs.

Fellow senior Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba, Brazil) booked 12 digs in the match, moving her within three of Cindy O’Brien for second place on the school’s all-time list.

Kim Stewart led the Blue Hens with 10 kills and 10 digs.

VCU returns to the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center on Saturday, Nov. 1 when it hosts Towson at 7 p.m. In honor of Senior Day, the Rams will recognize Kuehnel, Goncalves and Cat Juson (Long Beach, Calif.) prior to the match.
