RICHMOND, Va. – When Virginia Commonwealth University absolutely needed an answer, it turned to senior Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany). (pictured, above) Fortunately for the Rams, Kuehnel was happy to provide them.
Kuehnel registered match-highs of 15 kills, 16 digs and five service aces as VCU held off pesky George Mason, 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 20-25, 26-24) Friday night at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
The victory helps the Rams maintain their hold on second place in the Colonial Athletic Association. VCU improves to 13-8 overall and 5-2 in the league. The Rams remain tied with William & Mary, which defeated James Madison, 3-0 Friday.
Despite five kills from Kuehnel in the third set, the Patriots (6-15, 2-6) edged out the Rams for a 25-20 win. In the fourth, with VCU faltering, Kuehnel served up four aces, three consecutive, to stake the Black and Gold to a 21-15 lead. George Mason rallied to within a single point three times, but Kuehnel ripped kills on two of those occasions to keep the Patriots at bay. Then, with Kuehnel serving for the match, VCU junior Ivana Rich (Cumberland, Va.) locked up the win with an overhead tomahawk smash off a Cat Juson (Long Beach, Calif.) set.
Kuehnel hit .444 on the night for the Rams, while Rich provided nine kills, three blocks and hit .500. Sophomore Jessica Ojukwu (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added 10 kills and hit .474.
Laura Turner paced George Mason with 10 kills and a .368 hitting percentage.
VCU next takes the court when it welcomes James Madison to the Alltel Pavilion on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
