Box Score
RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Ariel Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) (pictured) touched up Hofstra for 14 kills and a pair of blocks to lead Virginia Commonwealth University to victory Saturday at the Alltel Pavilion.
The Rams remain in the thick of the Colonial Athletic Association race with the win, improving to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Pride has lost two straight to slip to 8-10, as well as 2-3 in the CAA.
Newman hit .355, committing just three errors in 31 swings for VCU, which hit .221 on the night. In addition, senior Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany) recorded 11 kills and a .276 hitting percentage.
Playing without ailing senior setter Cat Juson (Long Beach, Calif.), the Rams were forced to switch to a 5-1 alignment. Sophomore setter Lenka Melicharkova (Zlin, Czech Republic), distributed a season-high 38 assists as a result, while sophomore Mariel Frey (Lititz, Pa.) registered a career-best 20 digs and eight kills. Prior to Saturday, Frey hadn’t been credited with more than nine digs in a match her two seasons with VCU.
Harmonie Calinda led Hofstra with 10 kills and 12 digs, but it couldn’t prevent the Pride from dropping its second straight to the Rams in this series.
Next time out, VCU will head to Williamsburg, Va. for a rematch with second-place William & Mary on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at Kaplan Arena.
