Tournament Results/Recap

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University received 11 kills from tournament MVP Ariel Newman (Greensboro, N.C.), but Maryland prevailed, 25-22, 25-19, 26-24, in the nightcap of the VCU/Third Degree Sportswear Invitational Saturday at the Siegel Center.

VCU is 2-1 after the loss, while Maryland improves to 1-2.

Sophomore Jessica Ojukwu (Sao Paulo, Brazil) hit .267 with eight kills and senior Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba, Brazil) added 10 digs for the Black and Gold.

Michelle Kenning had a match-high 13 kills, while Katie Usher added 10 kills and five blocks for Maryland.

The Rams found themselves behind early after Usher recorded four kills and two blocks to help the Terrapins squeeze out a 25-22 win in the first set. VCU out-hit the Terrapins, .275-.189, but it wasn’t enough.

The second set got off to an inauspicious start for the Black and Gold, as Maryland raced to a 10-2 lead. Remarkably, VCU engineered an 11-3 burst to tie the set at 13-13. However, the Terrapins responded with a 10-3 salvo to turn the Rams away.

VCU returns to action Sept. 5-6 when it travels to Coral Gables, Fla. to take on South Dakota State, Alabama and host Miami (Fla.) at the Hurricane Invitational.
