RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore Jessica Ojukwu (Sao Paulo, Brazil) ripped a season-high 19 kills, but Towson came away with a 3-1 (25-20, 27-25, 18-25, 25-14) victory Saturday at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
VCU slips to 15-9 overall, as well as 7-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Towson improves to 18-9, 7-4 in league play.
Ojukwu hit a blistering .548 for the match. She was a perfect 6-of-6 in the third set, as the Rams attempted to mount a comeback.
Senior Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba, Brazil) recorded a match-high 23 digs for VCU, and moved into second place on the Rams’ all-time list with 1,760. Fellow seniors Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany) and Cat Juson (Long Beach, Calif.), added 12 kills and 25 assists, respectively. All three were honored prior to the match as part of Senior Day.
Britney Loomis provided 15 kills and Maddie Haseltine added 10 kills and three blocks to lead the Tigers, who avenged a loss to VCU Oct. 3 in Towson, Md.
The Rams registered 12 blocks, but struggled to get going offensively, hitting .114.
VCU returns to action on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3 when it hosts American at 7 p.m. It will be the Rams’ final regular season home contest.
