RAMS LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK WITH ROAD TEST AT WILLIAM & MARY
Black and Gold look to stay within striking distance of first place
1-28-09
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi once said, “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get back up.”
That test will take place tonight for the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s basketball team who will be in search of its 12th win in 14 tries when it takes on the Tribe of William & Mary for the second time in two weeks.
VCU is reeling from a tough 73-60 loss at UNC Wilmington, in which the Black & Gold gave up the most points since Feb. 16th against fourth-ranked North Carolina.
“We just need to show the same intensity on the defensive end of the court that we have shown all year,” Head Coach Beth Cunningham said. “Great defense usually turns into a great offense.”
Leading that offense of late has been the upperclassmen duo of D’Andra Moss (Atlanta, Ga.) and Radoslava Bachvarova (Varna, Bulgaria), who combined for 37 of the Rams’ 60 points, against the Seahawks.
Moss blistered the nets on 11-of-15 shooting from the field last week and is coming off a career-high 21 points against UNC Wilmington. Bachvarova poured in 16 points against UNC Wilmington and 12 against Hofstra, while dishing out six assists in the two contests.
The Tribe is on a four-game skid and has not won a game since the Rams handed them a 69-52 loss at the Siegel Center on Jan. 15th.
Frontcourt standout Tiffany Benson leads William & Mary with 12.3 points and 11.1 rebounds per outing, while Kelly Heath and Dani Kelly are each chipping in 8.2 ppg, respectively.
In VCU’s 69-52 victory over the Tribe two weeks ago, four players scored in double-figures to lead a balanced attack and the defense held William & Mary without a point for the first seven minutes of the contest.
The Rams have now won four of the last five meetings between the two schools and hold a 48-20 advantage in the 27-year old storied rivalry.
