DÉJÀ VU; RAMS CLIP ODU, MEET W&M IN CHAMPIONSHIP – AGAIN
Release: 04/19/2008

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – It may sound like a broken record, but for the seventh straight year, Virginia Commonwealth University and William & Mary will meet in the Colonial Athletic Association title match Sunday.

VCU earned its way to the tournament championship Saturday with a 4-0 victory over rival Old Dominion at the Huntington Park Tennis Center.

The second-seeded Rams (18-4) slipped by ODU, 4-3, April 11 in Norfolk, Va., but left little room for drama Saturday.

Senior Tatsiana Uvarova helped lead the way, dispatching Charleen Haarhoff, 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 singles position. Uvarova is 25-7 this season.

The Rams also got victories at the No. 4 and 5 spots from sophomores Laura Burns and Olena Leonchuk, respectively.

VCU and William & Mary have a long history in this tournament. The Rams captured their two CAA titles through the Tribe in 2003, 2006. Meanwhile, William & Mary earned the crown in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2007.

The top-seeded Tribe defeated VCU, 5-2, March 29 in Williamsburg, Va. Sunday’s title match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Huntington Park Tennis Center.
