RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University flexed its depth Saturday, sweeping the lower singles and doubles positions on the way to a 5-2 win over Penn.

The victory halts a three-match losing streak for the Rams and improves them to 5-3 on the year.

Despite falling at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, VCU ripped through the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 spots. Junior Laura Burns led the way, defeating Alexa Ely, 6-4, 6-4 on the No. 3 court. Burns also teamed with sophomore Kateryna Yergina for a victory at second doubles.

Junior Olena Leonchuk and freshman Mihaela Bunea were also winners at both singles and doubles.

The Rams return to action on Friday, Feb. 7 when they take on Penn State at 12 p.m. in State College, Pa.
