RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Olena Leonchuk (pictured) won her 10th consecutive singles match, but it wasn’t enough to carry Virginia Commonwealth University, which dropped a 4-3 decision to Boston University Sunday at the Thalhimer Teninis Center.
The Rams fall to 14-6 with the loss. The Terriers are 10-5.
A native of Kiev, Ukraine, Leonchuk defeated Elizabeth Carrao in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 on the No. 5 court. She is 16-3 this season in singles action, including an 11-1 ledger at fifth postion.
Leonchuk hasn’t lost since Feb. 13, when she fell to Dorothy Dohanics of Penn State.
Also for the Rams, freshman Mihaela Bunea and junior Laura Burns each picked up their 18th singles victory of the year.
Burns moved to 18-4 on the year when she topped Petra Santini, 6-3, 6-2 on the No. 3 court.
Bunea clipped Yana Sadouskaya, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 at sixth singles. Bunea is 18-6 this season, including 13-3 in dual matches.
VCU returns to action on Monday, March 30 when it hosts William & Mary in a rain suspended match at the Thalhimer Tennis Center at 2 p.m. Play will begin with singles. The Rams earned the doubles point Friday before rain halted the match.
