VIRGINIA TECH NO MATCH FOR VCU, 6-1
2-11-09
RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University may have gotten off to a slow start, but it finished strong, sweeping singles play as it rolled to a 6-1 win over Virginia Tech Saturday at Thalhimer Tennis Center.
VCU has won three of four to improve to 7-4 this season. The Hokies fall to 6-2 on the year.
Virginia Tech raced out to a 1-0 lead with victories in two of three doubles matches, but it was all Rams from there.
Freshman Ana Bara scored an impressive victory on the No. 1 court for VCU, ripping No. 125 Inga Beerman in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
In the Meantime, junior Laura Burns continued to rack up wins, outlasting Yasmin Hamza, 7-5, 7-6 (5) on the No. 4 court. Burns improves to 11-2 this season, including 4-0 at fourth position. She is 32-6 in singles play during her two-year VCU career. Burns also teamed with sophomore Kateryna Yergina for a win at No. 2 doubles.
The Rams return to action on Sunday, Feb. 22 when they welcome South Florida to the friendly confines of the Thalhimer Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
