WILLIAMS’ POST SCHOOL RECORD IN CAREER-ENDING RUN
Veteran breaks nine-year school record

ATLANTA, Ga. – Few athletes get the chance to end their careers on top. Senior Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach, Va.) of the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s track and field team is one of the lucky ones as the four-year standout finished her career on Saturday afternoon with a school-record breaking run at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.

Williams personal best in the 800-meter before the weekend was 2:14.74 and her eyes were set on former Ram All-American Maria-Elena Calle’s school record time of 2:11.69 from 1999.

The four-year standout, who has posted a career-best campaign this spring, crossed the finish line moments before Calle’s time as her time of 2:11.43, breaking the nine-year old school record by .26 seconds.

Overall, she placed 19th at the prestigious regular season finale for many schools across the East Coast as Williams came up just short of the NCAA Regionals qualifying time of 2:09.80.

Williams will turn the reigns over to the next class of seniors as she was the only member of the Black and Gold to participate in the season-ending meet.
